BSI
The standard behind any correct radiator or boiler sizing figure, published 31 July 2017 and current but under review. It gives methods for calculating the design heat load for single rooms, building entities and whole buildings, where design heat load is the heat supply in watts needed to hold the required internal design temperature under design external conditions. The calculation is carried out before heating system components are dimensioned and accounts for multiple heat emission devices in one room, domestic hot water heating power where significant, and how required heating power is split between multiple heat generators. It sits in the EPB standard set as Module M3-3, with PD CEN/TR 12831-2 as the explanatory companion. Cite this when a note says a BTU calculator is a shortcut for a proper room-by-room heat loss calculation.

STATUS: CURRENT. The live edition is BS 3621:2017+A1:2024, published 26 September 2024, superseding BS 3621:2017, BS 3621:2007+A2:2012, BS 3621:2004, BS 3621:1998 and BS 3621:1980. It specifies performance requirements and test methods for a thief resistant, mechanically operated single point lock assembly (including locking plates, fixing screws, fitting instructions, cylinders and protective furniture) incorporating a lock conforming to BS EN 12209:2016, lockable from both sides by key so that only key egress is possible, for doors, window doors and entrance doors. It explicitly excludes keyless egress assemblies, which are covered by BS 8621, and secure no egress modes, covered by BS 10621. Notes that quote BS 3621 as the insurance benchmark for a front door lock should cite the 2017+A1:2024 edition, not the 2007 one. The BSI catalogue page confirms number, title, date, status and scope; the full requirements are paywalled.

STATUS: CURRENT. BS EN 215:2019 was published 30 September 2019, is identical to EN 215 and supersedes BS EN 215:2004; it also replaces the older British specification BS 6284:1983. It covers thermostatic radiator valves for wet central heating systems, specifically two port and integrated thermostatic valves with or without pre setting, rated for water up to 120 degrees C and nominal pressure PN 10 or lower. It gives definitions, performance requirements and test methods, plus dimensions, permitted materials and connection specifications for four series of straight and angle pattern valves, with tests for thermal performance, flow rate and endurance. This is the standard to cite when a note says a TRV must be to BS EN 215, and the reason a TRV should not be fitted in the same room as the room thermostat. Catalogue page confirms number, title, date, status and scope; the test detail is paywalled.

Published 15 September 2000 and current. This is the standard behind soil and waste pipe sizing and layout inside a house, and the document that replaced the withdrawn BS 5572 code of practice for sanitary pipework on the same date. It applies to wastewater drainage systems operating under gravity in dwellings and in commercial, institutional and industrial buildings, and sets out the principles to be followed for both layout and calculation of sanitary pipework, with only limited provisions for trade effluent and pumped fluids. It sits alongside BS EN 12056-1 for general and performance requirements, -3 for roof drainage, -4 for wastewater lifting plants and -5 for installation, testing and maintenance. Cite it, with Approved Document H, when a note gives soil stack or branch waste pipe diameters, trap seal depths or branch gradients.

The current version of PAS 24, published 30 September 2024, superseding PAS 24:2022. It specifies test methods and acceptance criteria for doorsets and windows intended to resist the attacks associated with a casual or opportunistic burglar, covering hinged, sliding, pivot and folding windows and single and double leaf hinged, sliding, pivot and folding doorsets. The A1:2024 amendment was made to keep pace with the changing modus operandi of criminals and to update referenced industry documents. It tests the manufactured product before installation and does not specify materials or installation methods. PAS 24 is the specification behind Approved Document Q in England and Wales, appears at clause 4.13 of the Scottish building standards, and certification to it is one route to meeting the police Secured by Design scheme.

IET FAQ page on Section 722 of BS 7671. States that Regulation 722.531.2.101 requires the charging point to be RCD protected by its own RCD of at least a Type A, having a residual operating current not exceeding 30 mA, and that the requirement attaches to the charging point rather than necessarily the whole final circuit. Notes that in practice the RCD will usually be installed within the charging equipment and advises verifying this with the equipment supplier. Refers on to the IET Code of Practice for Electric Vehicle Charging Equipment Installation. Useful for correcting notes that claim a Type B or Type F RCD is required for domestic EV chargers.

National Police Chiefs' Council
The NPCC document that decides whether a monitored alarm gets a police response, adopted by forces in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. To be compliant a security system must comply with a recognised public domain standard or code of practice covering manufacture, installation, maintenance and operation, and the installing, maintaining and monitoring companies must be certified by a UKAS accredited certification body. Type A remote signalling systems must be monitored by an Alarm Receiving Centre, Remote Video Response Centre or System Operating Centre complying with BS 5979 (Cat II) or BS EN 50518 and BS 8591, and a Unique Reference Number is issued by the police force only to systems monitored by such a centre. Consumer protections in the 2018 revision matter for a cost note: monitoring and maintenance contracts shall not exceed three years and payments in advance shall not exceed one year, companies must not misrepresent the cost of a URN to clients, a customer must be informed if a URN is cancelled for non-payment of the administration fee, and call back confirmation is available to domestic and residential premises only, having been withdrawn for commercial premises. False activation management and keyholding and response are covered by their own British Standards, and the document sets out URN withdrawal for repeated false alarms.

Water Regulations Approval Scheme
Sets out that WRAS checks testing of water fittings for compliance with the Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations and the Scottish Byelaws, which impose a legal duty on everyone to use suitable water fittings when connected to a public water supply, covering pipes, fittings, taps, showers, washing machines, dishwashers, coffee machines, boilers and toilets. States plainly that a WRAS approval itself is not mandatory but the testing is, so the point of the approval is proof that the required material and mechanical tests were passed, including that a product will not affect the taste or smell of drinking water or promote microorganism growth. Every approved fitting carries requirement and installation notes stating conditions of use, for example cold water only. Non-compliant fittings may have to be replaced and can lead to prosecution and a fine; cites British insurers' data that a burst pipe repair claim in freezing weather costs on average 8,800 pounds.

WaterRegsUK (Water Regulations Advisory Scheme)
The depths and protections that decide whether a new supply or a bathroom pipe run is compliant. Below ground, a water supply pipe must be laid not less than 750 mm deep and no greater than 1350 mm deep, to limit both freezing and mechanical damage; where a shallower run is unavoidable it needs the local water undertaker's consent and must be as deep as possible with added protection against warming, freezing and mechanical damage. Pipes and fittings must be suitable for below ground use, joints kept to a minimum, and the pipe embedded in non-abrasive material. Non-metallic fittings must not be in contact with soil contaminated by diesel, heating fuel, pesticides or similar substances. Insulation, installed to manufacturer instructions and to BS 5422 or BS EN ISO 12241, may delay but will not prevent freezing, so depth and routing do the real work. Above ground, pipework must remain accessible for maintenance and replacement, and concealed joints should be used only where unavoidable because they lose integrity over time. The page names Schedule 2 paragraph 7 for pipework and paragraphs 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 14 for system design and installation.
