    Robust Details Ltd

The scheme that lets a builder skip pre-completion sound testing by registering a certified separating wall or floor construction instead, and the practical answer for a note that says a converted flat must pass a sound test. The site publishes an introduction to the scheme, the Robust Details Handbook containing the full specification for each detail, and the registration process for new houses and flats, with separate routes signposted for Scotland and Northern Ireland because the underlying regulations differ there. A registered Robust Detail must be built exactly as specified, which is why floor build-up and underlay substitutions matter.

  5. good RN-ENP5OQ cited

BWF Fire Door Alliance (British Woodworking Federation)

Gives the installation tolerances a homeowner can check on a newly fitted fire door: the gap between door and frame at head and sides should be 2 to 4 mm, and the threshold gap should follow the manufacturer's instructions, typically around 8 to 10 mm. Voids between the frame and the surrounding wall must be tightly packed with mineral wool. Essential ironmongery must be CE marked, firmly fixed with no missing screws and compatible with the leaf's certification, and the frame, lining or casing and the intumescent and smoke seals must match the door's fire rating. Cutting glazing apertures or air transfer grilles on site invalidates certification and may only be done by a certificated licensed processor.

  6. good RN-X5IZ09 cited

BWF Fire Door Alliance (British Woodworking Federation)

Gives the intumescent seal sizes for domestic fire doors: 15 mm x 4 mm for most modern 30 minute doors other than doorsets, and 20 mm x 4 mm, or two of 10 mm x 4 mm, for most modern 60 minute doors. Gaps around the leaf should not exceed 3 mm along the two long edges and across the top; the gap at the bottom is usually around 10 mm for non-smoke conditions but 3 mm where smoke seals are required. Seals expand under heat to fill the gap, with sodium silicate and graphite types expanding at different rates, so the same seal type should be used all round; combined intumescent and smoke seals resist cold smoke and are a Building Regulation requirement in some circumstances.

    Dulux Trade (AkzoNobel)

Manufacturer specifier guide with the numbers behind a how-much-paint calculation. Coverage is quoted at 18 m2 per litre for Diamond Matt, 17 m2 per litre for Vinyl Matt, and 16 m2 per litre for the other two grades in the comparison table, so a 5 litre tin covers roughly 85 m2 in one coat and a two coat job on a 40 m2 room needs about 5 litres. Scrub resistance is Scrub Class 5 on the top grade against Scrub Class 2 on Vinyl Matt, both Class 1 to ISO 11998 and Type C to BS 7719. Dulux Trade Vinyl Matt is stated to be 99.9 per cent VOC free based on in-can VOC content measured to ISO 11890-2:2013, and the guide shows measured VOC emissions in mg/m3 against the BREEAM TVOC threshold of less than or equal to 1.0 mg/m3. For airless spraying the guide specifies a 515 or 517 tip at 1300-1700 psi (89-117 bar). The manufacturer notes coverage is a guideline only and varies with equipment, substrate and application.

    Dunlop (ARDEX)

Manufacturer technical data for a standard water resistant floor and wall tile adhesive, useful as the baseline against a flexible adhesive. At 3mm thickness a 20 kg bag covers approximately 2 kg/m2 on dry wall areas and 3.5 kg/m2 on floors, exterior and wet areas. Open time is 15 to 20 minutes, noticeably shorter than the 30 to 45 minutes of the S1 grade. Bed thickness is 3 to 6mm. Mix ratio is about 2.5 parts powder to 1 part water by volume, roughly 5.6 litres of cold water per 20 kg bag. Application is at about 20C and never below 5C. It exceeds BS EN 12004 for a C1T adhesive, and the manufacturer states it is not suitable for porcelain tiles or exterior areas unless a flexible additive is used. Maximum weight of tiling including adhesive is 20 kg/m2 onto plaster and 32 kg/m2 onto plasterboard, with plasterboard requiring fixing at 300mm centres or as the board manufacturer directs.
