The single biggest factor in how long a carpet lasts is how well it is maintained day to day. A quality mid-range carpet that is vacuumed regularly, treated promptly when stained, and professionally cleaned every one to two years can last 10–15 years or more. The same carpet, neglected, may need replacing in half that time.

This guide covers the practical routine care that homeowners can do themselves, how to tackle the most common stains, when to call in professionals, and the warning signs that tell you it’s time to replace rather than restore.

How Often Should You Vacuum?

Vacuuming frequency depends on traffic and lifestyle. Grit is the main enemy of pile carpets: it works its way down into the pile and cuts fibres at the base, causing premature wear that no amount of cleaning can reverse.

As a general rule:

  • High-traffic areas (hallways, living rooms, stairs): vacuum two to three times per week1
  • Medium-traffic areas (bedrooms, dining rooms): once or twice per week
  • Low-traffic areas (spare rooms, studies): once per week is sufficient
  • Homes with pets or children: add an extra vacuum session per week throughout

Use a vacuum with a rotating brush or beater bar for cut-pile carpets.2 For loop-pile carpets (Berber, sisal-style), use suction only: a beater bar can snag and lift the loops, leaving the carpet bobbled or felted.2

Vacuum slowly enough that suction can pull grit from deep in the pile. One pass each way (north-south, then east-west) is more effective than multiple rapid passes in the same direction.

Stain Removal by Stain Type

Speed matters more than technique. Blot, never rub, and always work from the outside of the stain towards the centre to avoid spreading.1 Test any cleaning solution on a hidden patch first.

StainMethod
Red wineBlot immediately. Apply cold water, then a mixture of washing-up liquid and white wine vinegar (1:1). Blot repeatedly. For dried stains, try a diluted carpet cleaner or Wine Away spray.
Pet urine (fresh)Blot up as much liquid as possible. Apply an enzymatic cleaner (e.g., Simple Solution, Pets at Home own-brand), enzymes break down uric acid. Avoid steam cleaning; heat can set the stain and smell.
Pet urine (dried)Use an enzymatic cleaner, apply generously, leave 10–15 minutes, then blot. May need two or three applications.
CoffeeBlot immediately. Apply cold water, then a solution of washing-up liquid and water (1 tsp per 250ml). Rinse and blot dry.
Grease / cooking fatScrape off solids. Apply a solvent-based stain remover or cornflour to absorb. Leave 15 minutes, vacuum off, then treat with washing-up liquid solution.
MudAllow to dry fully first, attempting to clean wet mud drives it deeper. Once dry, vacuum up as much as possible, then use a carpet cleaner or diluted washing-up liquid solution on the residue.
BloodCold water only: hot water can set the stain. Blot with cold water repeatedly. Diluted hydrogen peroxide (3%) works on light-coloured carpets; test first.
InkDab (do not rub) with isopropyl alcohol on a white cloth. Work from the edge inwards. Do not over-wet.

Enzyme cleaners work only on organic matter such as urine, vomit and other pet accidents, so they will not shift wine, ink or grease.3

If a stain does not respond to home treatment after two or three attempts, call a professional rather than over-treating, excessive application of cleaning products can damage pile fibres and leave a residue that attracts future dirt.

Professional Deep Cleaning

Home vacuuming and spot treatment cannot remove the deep-seated dirt, allergens, and oils that accumulate in carpet pile over time. Professional hot-water extraction (steam cleaning) reaches the base of the pile and rinses out residue that DIY methods leave behind.

Recommended intervals:

  • Most households: every 12–18 months
  • Homes with pets or allergy sufferers: every 6–12 months
  • Rental properties between tenancies: after every tenancy

Typical 2026 UK prices for professional carpet cleaning (indicative; get quotes):

Room typeTypical cost
Small bedroom (up to 10m²)£25–£35
Double bedroom (10–15m²)£35–£50
Living room (15–25m²)£45–£70
Hallway and stairs£40–£80
Whole house (3 bed)£150–£280

Prices vary by region, and London and the South East tend to be higher than elsewhere. Most professional cleaners offer a whole-house discount versus room-by-room pricing.

Drying time after hot-water extraction is typically 2–6 hours in summer with good ventilation. In winter or with poor ventilation, allow 12–24 hours before walking on the carpet in shoes. Open the windows and put the heating on, or use fans, to speed drying.3

Protecting Carpets from Furniture Dents

Heavy furniture compresses pile fibres over time. To minimise permanent denting:

  • Place carpet cups or furniture coasters under chair and sofa legs, these spread the load and are widely available from DIY stores for £1–£3 per set
  • Move furniture slightly (even a few centimetres) every six to twelve months to change the pressure points
  • For existing dents, place ice cubes on the dent and allow to melt slowly, as the water is absorbed, the fibres often lift back. Finish by gently teasing the pile upright with a coin edge or fork

Avoid rolling heavy furniture directly across carpet; use a flat piece of hardboard to distribute the weight while manoeuvring.

Preventing Sun Fade

Direct sunlight degrades carpet dyes over time, UV exposure causes fading that is uneven (worse near windows and patio doors) and impossible to reverse. Steps to reduce fading:

  • Window film: some clear window films block 99% of the UV rays that cause fading4
  • Blinds and curtains: closing blinds or curtains during peak sun hours (roughly 11am–3pm in summer) significantly reduces UV exposure
  • Rotate rugs: if you have rugs over carpet or as the main floor covering, rotate them twice a year so fading is even
  • Fade-resistant carpets: solution-dyed nylon and polypropylene carpets are inherently more fade-resistant than wool or acid-dyed fibres, worth considering in south-facing rooms

When to Replace Rather Than Clean

Professional cleaning can restore carpets significantly, but there are situations where replacement is the better investment:

  • Permanent staining that has not responded to professional treatment and is visible from a standing position
  • Pile that is flat or matted in high-traffic areas and does not lift after cleaning, a sign that fibres are worn through at the base
  • Persistent odour that returns after professional cleaning, especially from pet urine that has soaked through to the underlay or subfloor
  • Visible wear-through in heavy-traffic spots (in front of sofas, on stairs)
  • Underlay failure: if you can feel the hard subfloor when walking, the underlay has collapsed and no amount of surface cleaning will fix the feel underfoot

As a rough guide, a budget polypropylene carpet under heavy use may last 5–8 years; a mid-grade twist-pile might give 10–15 years; a good-quality wool carpet, properly maintained, 15–25 years.

Quick-Reference Carpet Care Routine

  • Vacuum high-traffic areas 2–3 times per week
  • Treat spills immediately; blot, never rub
  • Use furniture coasters under heavy legs
  • Protect from direct UV with blinds or window film
  • Book professional hot-water extraction every 12–18 months
  • Review condition annually, repair underlay before buying new carpet
