Stretch-fitted carpet, laid using the gripper rod method rather than glued directly to the floor, costs between £15 and £60 per square metre supply and fit for most grades in the UK in 2026, and up to about £85 for 100% wool. Budget loop pile carpet bought from a national retailer sits at the lower end; a premium Saxony or wool-blend carpet from an independent carpet shop can exceed £50/m² before the fitter’s day rate.

The gripper rod method is by far the most common installation approach in UK homes. Gripper rods are nailed or glued around the room perimeter, a separate underlay is laid, and the carpet is stretched over it and tucked under the grippers at the edges. This allows the carpet to be removed and replaced without damaging the subfloor, which matters if you ever want to expose floorboards underneath.

Cost Per m² by Carpet Type: Supply and Fit

The table below shows 2026 UK price ranges for carpet plus standard underlay plus fitting, as a combined per-m² figure. These are national averages; London and the south-east typically cost more.

Carpet TypeCarpet Alone (per m²)With Underlay + Fit (per m²)
Budget loop pile (polypropylene)£5–£12£15–£25
Mid-range loop pile (wool blend)£12–£25£22–£38
Cut pile / twist pile (polyester)£10–£22£20–£35
Saxony (luxury cut pile)£20–£45£32–£60
Berber (flatweave loop, natural)£18–£40£28–£55
Wool (100% woven)£25–£70£38–£85

Carpet is typically sold in 4m or 5m widths. Rooms wider than the roll require a join, which a good fitter will place where it is least visible (under a sofa, in a doorway threshold). Joins add to waste and therefore cost.

Understanding the Gripper Rod Method

Gripper rods are thin strips of plywood or MDF with angled tacks punched through, fixed around the room perimeter approximately 6–8mm from the skirting. The gap between rod and skirting is where the carpet edge is tucked, hiding the gripper completely.

The carpet is hooked onto the grippers at one end of the room, then stretched across using a knee-kicker (for smaller rooms) or a power stretcher (for larger spaces), and finally hooked onto the opposite wall’s grippers. Proper stretching prevents rippling, which is the most common complaint with poorly fitted carpet.

For concrete subfloors, grippers are fixed with adhesive or masonry nails. For timber subfloors, standard nails are used. Either way, gripper rod costs about £1 per linear metre or less (a 15 m pack sells for around £13) and is usually included in the fitter’s quote.1

Underlay: What It Costs and Why It Matters

Underlay is not optional for stretch-fitted carpet, it is part of what the gripper rod method relies on for correct tension. Good underlay also extends carpet life significantly by reducing wear from below.

Underlay TypeCost Per m² (Supply Only)
Budget foam (recycled)£1.50–£3.00
Mid-range PU foam (10mm)£3.00–£6.002
Rubber crumb (premium)£5.00–£9.00
Wool felt (traditional)£6.00–£12.00

Building Regulations do not specify underlay type, but some carpet warranties are conditional on an appropriate underlay being installed.

For underfloor heating, the Carpet Foundation treats 2.5 tog as a realistic maximum for carpet and underlay combined, and recommends an underlay of less than 1.3 tog.3

Room Size Effects on Total Cost

Carpet is cut from a roll, so room shape and the roll width both affect waste. An L-shaped room or a room wider than 4–5m will involve a join or significantly more waste. Fitters typically charge for the area of carpet used, not the net room area.

Room Size (Net)Estimated Waste FactorExpected Charge Area
Small bedroom (10–14 m²)10–20%11–17 m²
Double bedroom (14–20 m²)8–15%15–23 m²
Lounge / diner (20–30 m²)5–15%21–35 m²
Open plan (30 m²+)5–10%32 m²+

Always ask the fitter to keep offcuts. Large pieces can be used in hallways, cupboards, or as a spare if a section is later damaged.

Stair Carpet Fitting Costs

Stairs are charged differently. Fitters price stairs per tread (horizontal step) or per riser-and-tread combined. Winders (angled treads on curved staircases) cost more.

Stair TypeFitting Charge (Per Tread)
Standard straight staircase£12–£20 per tread
Winder / curved stairsmore than a straight tread: ask for a fixed quote

A typical straight UK staircase has around 12 or 13 treads. Budget carpet fitted to a straight staircase with landing might cost £250–£450 supply and fit all-in. A premium Saxony on a curved staircase costs considerably more, because winders take longer to fit and use more carpet.

Stair carpet can be fitted waterfall style (carpet falls straight over the nose of each tread) or with a separate tuck (carpet wraps into each crevice between tread and riser). The latter uses more carpet but looks cleaner.

Direct Stick vs Stretch Fit

Some commercial and high-traffic applications use direct stick (glue-down) carpet. In domestic settings this is uncommon. The main difference:

  • Stretch fit (gripper rod): carpet can be lifted and relaid; underlay is separate; better sound insulation; standard for residential use.
  • Direct stick: no underlay; carpet is permanently bonded; better for very heavy commercial traffic or wheelchair use; more disruptive to remove.

For most UK homes, stretch fit is the right choice.

Additional Costs to Budget For

  • Furniture moving: most fitters charge £30–£80 per room if they move furniture; some refuse to move heavy items.
  • Uplift and disposal of old carpet: £20–£50 per room, or you can remove it yourself and save.
  • Door trimming: if new carpet or underlay raises floor height, doors may need the bottom trimming. A carpenter charges £40–£80 per door.
  • Threshold strips: where carpet meets a different flooring material, a threshold strip (door bar) is needed. Budget £5–£20 per doorway.4

Getting the Best Price

Prices vary considerably between national retail chains (which often bundle free fitting with purchase above a spend threshold) and independent carpet specialists. Independent fitters typically charge £3–£8 per m² for fitting alone, meaning the carpet itself sets the price. Chain retailers sometimes mark up carpet to subsidise “free” fitting, so comparing supply-only prices plus an independent fitter’s quote is worth doing for larger jobs.

Always confirm in writing whether the quote includes underlay, gripper rods, and door bars, as these are common sources of surprise additions.
