Outlet at END of run, gutter fixed LEVEL (max flow rate l/s, then BS 12056 rate, then roof area m2 for each): Half Round with 68mm round downpipe 0.92 / 0.82 l/s, 44 / 40 m2; Square Line with 65mm square downpipe 1.70 / 1.53 l/s, 81 / 73 m2; Hi-Cap with 68mm downpipe 2.05 / 1.84 l/s, 98 / 88 m2; Hi-Cap with 80mm downpipe 2.25 / 2.02 l/s, 108 / 97 m2; Niagara ogee with 65mm square 2.40 / 2.16 l/s, 115 / 104 m2; Niagara with 80mm round 2.64 / 2.37 l/s, 127 / 114 m2; XtraFlo with 110mm downpipe 4.30 / 3.87 l/s, 206 / 185 m2. Laying the gutter to a 1:350 fall raises Half Round to 1.17 l/s / 56 m2 and Hi-Cap 68mm to 2.56 l/s / 123 m2. Moving the outlet to the CENTRE of the run roughly doubles capacity: Half Round level 1.80 l/s / 86 m2, Hi-Cap 68mm 3.80 l/s / 182 m2, XtraFlo 8.20 l/s / 393 m2, and at 1:350 fall Half Round 2.60 l/s / 125 m2 and XtraFlo 11.80 l/s / 566 m2. Reduced capacities apply where bends are incorporated. Systems carry BSI Kitemark KM501316 to BS EN 607 (PVC-U eaves gutters), BS EN 12200-1 and BS EN 1462 (brackets); MiniFlo gutter and the painted Cast Iron style range are excluded from the Kitemark.

Marley western red cedar shingles: 400mm long with random widths 75mm to 350mm, 10mm thick at the butt tapering, minimum pitch 14 degrees, fixed to 38mm battens. Gauge, coverage and laid weight change sharply with pitch. At 75-90 degrees (vertical cladding) maximum gauge 175mm, 3.20 m2 covered per bundle, laid weight 4.0 kg/m2, 5.3 lin.m/m2 of battens. At 22-74 degrees maximum gauge 125mm, 2.28 m2 per bundle, 6.1 kg/m2, 8.0 lin.m/m2 of battens. At 14-21 degrees maximum gauge 95mm, only 1.73 m2 per bundle, 8.1 kg/m2, 10.5 lin.m/m2 of battens. Marshalls

Marshalls' homeowner-level version of its installation guidance, giving the same build-up in plainer numbers. Excavate 150mm across the whole patio area over evenly compacted soil. Lay and compact a sub-base to a consistent 100mm depth, smooth, flat and firm. Mix a bedding of three parts sharp sand to one part cement, wetted to a doughy consistency, and spread it as an even 40mm layer. Dampen each slab before laying so it does not draw water out of the mix too quickly, then bed it down with a rubber mallet so it sits about 15mm into the mortar, leaving 10 to 15mm joints between slabs. Leave the patio to set for at least 24 hours before pointing or any finishing work. Read alongside the fuller Marshalls Installation Guidelines for Concrete Paving, which adds the two constraints this page omits: the 150mm minimum drop below the damp proof course where the paving abuts a building, and the 6m movement joint spacing.

    Marshalls

Marshalls' manufacturer installation specification for concrete paving, Issue 8, January 2023, and the document to quote when a contractor's method is in dispute. Sub-base: a minimum of 100mm for most domestic applications, using well graded 40mm-to-dust Type 1 material, placed in layers not exceeding 75mm, finished to plus 5 / minus 10mm of specified levels; recycled crushed masonry or concrete is acceptable. The finished paving surface, where laid up to an existing structure, must be a minimum of 150mm below the damp proof course to prevent rising damp - the single most commonly ignored figure in domestic patio work. Movement joints at 6m centres where the area is in prolonged direct sunlight, is a large open expanse, or uses a dark colour. Edge restraints go in before the sub-base and must give a consistent vertical face to below the laying course. Rigid laying: a full wet workable mortar bed of 1 part cement to 3 or 4 parts sharp sand, laid 30 to 40mm thick, reducing to about 25mm after tamping; back-priming the units is advised. Joints: minimum 10mm with units at least 22mm thick, filled with a damp mortar of 1 part cement to 4 parts building sand, or a proprietary jointing compound. Dry or semi-dry brushed-in sand/cement mixes must never be used, and butt jointing is not recommended.

    Marshalls

Atlas textured concrete paving, offered as a cost alternative to natural granite in three neutral grey tones. Five plan sizes in two depths, 60 mm and 80 mm, listed against length, width, thickness, approximate unit weight and approximate pack weight per colourway (St Ives, Eaglescliffe and a third grey). Suitable for pedestrian, light and commercial trafficked areas. Selected sizes are also made as Atlas Priora permeable. Marshalls note maximum loading suitability varies by size and depends on install method, bond pattern and sub-base design.

  15. supplier figure RN-4FQVCR

    Marshalls

Modal X Priora permeable concrete paving. Available in a textured finish, eight colours, seven plan sizes, in 60 mm or 80 mm depth, plus three complementary sett sizes in a riven texture. Nibs on the edges of each unit let water drain into the joints and into a prepared sub-base, then to ground or a controlled release to drain, removing the need for point drainage. Marshalls state the edge detail lets units be laid in any direction while still achieving 40% more interlock than standard paving. Example unit: Modal X Pro Priora Textured Riven 240 x 160 x 80 mm, approximate unit weight 8 kg, pack weight 1516 kg, made to order. Marshalls flag that maximum loading suitability does not apply to every size and depends on the install method, bond pattern and sub-base design. A non-permeable version of the same range is available.

It is touch dry in one hour with four hours between coats. No primer is required. Ronseal

Manufacturer application data for Ronseal Fence Life Plus. Coverage is up to 6 m2 per litre, far lower than an interior emulsion, which is the number to use when estimating for a rough sawn fence. Ronseal states the treatment lasts up to 5 years. It cannot be applied in the rain and needs a warm dry day with temperatures above 10C, since cold weather stops it drying properly and it can wash off. The manufacturer instruction is to overlap each pass by 50 per cent for proper coverage.

  21. supplier figure RN-OZF7XJ

    Ronseal

Manufacturer data for a water based decking oil. Coverage is 6.4 m2 per litre. It is rainproof in 90 minutes and touch dry in 90 minutes, with four hours before a second coat. Ronseal states it stops the deck turning grey or splitting. The application instruction is to start in the furthest corner and brush along the length of the boards, working 3 to 4 boards at a time to avoid overlap marks, which is the technique that prevents visible lap lines on a deck.
