In short: a structural engineer designs structural elements and produces the signed calculations required by Building Control. A building surveyor with structural experience — sometimes called a structural surveyor — inspects buildings, diagnoses defects, and advises on remediation, but typically cannot produce the engineered calculations that sign off structural work.
What a Structural Engineer Does

If your loft conversion or extension triggers the Party Wall Act (works within 3–6 metres of a neighbour’s structure, or directly astride the boundary), you’ll need both: a structural engineer for the design calculations and a party wall surveyor to serve notices and prepare the award.
Red Flags When Instructing
- No PI insurance: non-negotiable for structural work
- Calculating verbally: structural calculations must be written, signed, and submitted. Anyone who says they’ll “tell you what size beam to use” without producing calculations is not providing a Building Regulations-valid service.
