Built-in fitted wardrobes make efficient use of space, eliminate the visual clutter of freestanding furniture, and can significantly add to a room’s finished quality. The wide cost range — from a few hundred pounds of board materials to tens of thousands for a bespoke joiner installation — reflects genuinely different outcomes in terms of material quality, precision and longevity. This guide covers the full process from planning through to finishing, with honest guidance on where DIY is feasible and where professional involvement pays for itself.

Planning and Measuring

Careful planning before purchasing a single board prevents expensive mistakes. Fitted wardrobes, unlike freestanding furniture, are built to the precise dimensions of your space — and most UK rooms are neither square, plumb nor level.

Measure thoroughly. Take measurements at multiple heights and depths:

  • Width: measure at floor level, mid-height, and just below the ceiling at each end of the run. Record the smallest dimension — that is your maximum width.
  • Height: measure at multiple points across the width. Note any variation, including any slope in the ceiling.
  • Depth: measure available depth including any obstructions (skirting boards project 12–20 mm; architraves project further).
  • Check for plumb on the walls using a spirit level — walls in older UK properties may lean inward or outward by several degrees over a full ceiling height.
  • Check for chimney breast projections, alcove returns, or boxing-in that interrupts the run.
  • Measure the diagonal to check for square in the alcove.

Sketch the layout. Draw a front elevation and plan view. Decide on the internal configuration: single-hanging (full height for dresses and long coats), double-hanging (two rails, one above the other), shelf sections, drawer units. As a rule of thumb, allow 1,050–1,200 mm hanging height for single rail, or 550 mm for each level in double hanging. Shelf spacing of 300–400 mm suits most folded clothing.

Door decision first. Hinged doors require swing clearance (typically equal to the door depth in front of the wardrobe) and cannot be used when the wardrobe faces a tight space or the foot of a bed. MDF is the standard choice for painted fitted wardrobes. It takes paint exceptionally well (with appropriate primer), can be routed to add moulding profiles, and is dimensionally stable. Edges must be sealed with edge-banding or painted filler primer before finishing. It is heavy, does not hold screws in its face as well as plywood, and is susceptible to moisture swelling if exposed in bathrooms or under leaking pipes.

Melamine-faced chipboard (MFC) provides a factory-finished surface that does not require painting. The white or wood-effect finish is the dominant aesthetic in flat-pack furniture and is practical for bedroom wardrobes. Exposed edges require iron-on edge banding in a matching finish. Screw-holding strength in the core is lower than plywood but adequate for shelves and carcasses if appropriate fixings (cam locks, confirmat screws) are used.

Plywood offers the best screw-holding strength and is lighter than MDF for the same thickness. It is the preferred choice in joiners’ workshops for carcass construction. The face veneer can be painted or finished to a high standard. Cost is higher than MDF or MFC.

Building a Carcass

Each wardrobe bay is essentially a box — top, bottom, two sides, a back, and any internal shelves or divisions. The sequence is:

Step 1 — Cut all panels to size. Work from your cutting list. Mark faces clearly. Cut the largest panels first (sides and tops), then smaller components. Use a guide rail on the circular saw for straight, tear-free cuts. If using MFC, cut with the face side down to reduce tear-out.

Step 2 — Cut notches for skirting boards. The base panel and side panels need to be notched to fit around the skirting board at the wall end and, depending on the design, at the front. Measure the skirting depth and height precisely — scribing over the skirting is the alternative for side panels, which creates a tighter finish but requires more skill.

Step 3 — Assemble the carcass. Fix the sides to the top and bottom panels using confirmat screws (5×50 mm), pocket screws, or cam lock fixings. Drill pilot holes. For painted MDF, PVA glue at the joints before screwing gives a very strong bond. Confirm the carcass is square by checking both diagonals — they must be equal. If not, clamp across the longer diagonal until equal and then fix the back panel to hold it square.

Step 4 — Fit the back panel. A 9 mm MDF or 6 mm plywood back panel keeps the carcass square and provides a surface against which the inside of the wardrobe reads cleanly. Fix with 30 mm screws at 200 mm centres into the back edges of the side, top and bottom panels.

Step 5 — Add shelf supports. Drill a row of 5 mm holes at regular centres (typically 32 mm spacing, 32 mm from the front and back edges) for adjustable shelf pins. Alternatively, fix fixed shelf supports (battens or shelf brackets) at predetermined heights.

Fitting into an Alcove or Wall-to-Wall

Alcove fitting is the most common configuration. The walls of the alcove form three sides and you are building the front face of the wardrobe. Sequence:

  1. Fix a horizontal batten to the back wall and one or both side walls as a shelf or top-panel bearer — this anchors the structure to the walls without needing freestanding feet.
  2. Build the carcass fractionally undersize in width (2–3 mm) and slide into the alcove.
  3. Scribe the side panels to the walls using a compass set to the widest gap — run the compass along the wall, transferring any irregularities to the panel, then plane or cut to the scribed line.
  4. Secure to wall studs or masonry through the back or through a batten at the top.

Wall-to-wall fitting follows the same principle but requires careful measurement of the exact width at ceiling, mid-point and floor level, and often a scribing panel at each end.

Ceilings: Where the ceiling is not flat (sloping rooms, loft conversions), the top rail or pelmet must be scribed to the ceiling profile. Use a flexible scribing block or create a cardboard template of the ceiling slope and transfer it to the panel.

Chimney breast projections: If the wardrobe run crosses a chimney breast projection, either box around it (creating a shallower bay on that section) or design the wardrobe to stop either side, with the chimney breast acting as a natural division between two wardrobe bays.

Internal Fittings

Hanging rails: 25 mm diameter chrome or steel hanging rails are standard. Fix end brackets into the carcass side panels at 1,600–1,800 mm from floor for single hanging, or at 550 mm and 1,100 mm for double hanging. Rail length over 900 mm should have a centre support.

Shelves: Adjustable shelves on shelf pins allow flexibility. Shelf thickness of 18 mm is adequate for spans up to 800 mm; use 25 mm or add a front lip (lipping) for longer spans to prevent sagging under load.

Drawers: Drawer boxes are most efficiently bought as pre-made units (melamine-coated or solid timber drawer boxes) fitted to undermount or side-mount drawer runners. Undermount runners are the current standard for quality installations — they are concealed beneath the drawer box and allow soft-close operation. Box depth should be 50–60 mm less than the carcass depth to allow the runner to operate within the carcass.

Doors

Hinged doors on tall wardrobes (above 2,200 mm) require at least three hinges per door — typically concealed cup hinges (Euro hinges) at 110° opening, which allow adjustment in three axes. Frameless carcasses use 16 mm overlay hinges; face-framed designs use half-overlay or inset. Soft-close dampers are standard practice.

Sliding doors use a top-hung or bottom-rolling track. Top-hung systems are simpler, cleaner and better suited to heavy doors. The track is fixed to a pelmet board at the ceiling or top of the wardrobe opening. Door height should be 8–10 mm less than the opening height. Sliding doors require a mirror, panel or glazed frame system — most are bought as complete kits rather than made individually.

Building Regulations: Part B Fire Doors

Approved Document B (Fire Safety) requires that in dwellings with an integral garage (attached to the house), any door between the living area and the garage must be a fire-resisting door (FD30 — 30-minute fire resistance). This rule extends to habitable rooms adjacent to the garage, which in practice means:

If you are building fitted wardrobes in a bedroom or hallway that has a door (or which could have a door) leading to an integral garage, the wardrobe door itself does not automatically require fire resistance — but the door between the room and the garage does, and it must be self-closing. If you are fitting a wardrobe into a hallway that forms the primary circulation route adjacent to a garage, check whether the wardrobe doors could impede access to the fire door. In some layouts, wardrobes are used to conceal the door between the hall and garage — in this case, the wardrobe door panel in front of the fire door must also meet the FD30 rating.

Common Mistakes

  • Not checking walls and ceilings are plumb and level. Assuming a room is square leads to carcasses that lean, doors that do not hang straight, and gaps that cannot be disguised.
  • Underspecifying shelf thickness. An 18 mm MDF shelf spanning 1,200 mm under a load of folded bedding will visibly sag within months. Use 25 mm, add a front lipping, or insert a centre division.
  • Painting MDF without primer. Raw MDF edges absorb primer and paint like a sponge — apply two coats of MDF primer to edges, lightly sand, then apply finish coats.
