Dimmer switches are one of the most straightforward upgrades in a home, but getting the wrong type for your bulbs can result in flickering, buzzing, or premature bulb failure. The key decision is not the style of the switch — it is the dimming technology inside it and whether it matches the driver built into your LED fittings.
Most problems with dimmers arise from fitting an older leading-edge unit to modern LED bulbs. LEDs have electronic drivers that require trailing-edge (or universal) dimmers to work correctly. Understanding this distinction before you buy will save you a return trip to the wholesaler.
Leading-Edge vs Trailing-Edge Dimmers
These terms describe which part of the AC mains waveform is chopped to reduce the power delivered to the bulb.
Leading-edge (LE) dimmers cut the front of the sine wave. They were designed for resistive and inductive loads — traditional tungsten filament bulbs and low-voltage halogen transformers. They are generally cheaper to manufacture and handle higher loads, but they can cause LED drivers to flicker, buzz, or fail entirely.
Trailing-edge (TE) dimmers cut the rear of the sine wave. They produce a much smoother power ramp and are far better suited to capacitive loads such as LED drivers and electronic transformers. They run cooler and quieter, and most LED manufacturers specify TE or universal dimmers in their compatibility lists.
Universal dimmers detect the load type and switch mode automatically. These are the safest choice if you are retrofitting across a mix of bulb types, though they carry a price premium of roughly £10–£20 over a single-mode TE unit.
Minimum and Maximum Load Ratings
Every dimmer switch has a load range printed on the faceplate or in the spec sheet — for example, 10W–250W. Both limits matter.
- Maximum load — exceed this and the dimmer overheats. Size for the total wattage of all bulbs on the circuit.
- Minimum load — fall below this and the dimmer cannot regulate smoothly, causing flicker. LED bulbs draw very low wattage (typically 4W–10W each), so a six-bulb circuit might only draw 40W — easily below the 60W minimum on an older unit.
Always check the minimum load against your actual LED wattage, not the old halogen equivalent quoted on the packaging.

Smart Dimmers
Smart dimmers replace a standard switch and connect via Wi-Fi, Zigbee, or Z-Wave to a hub or directly to a router. They add scheduling, scene control, and voice assistant integration. Key considerations:
- Most require a neutral wire at the switch. Older UK wiring (pre-2000) often lacks a neutral at ceiling rose switches — check before purchasing.
- Zigbee and Z-Wave units offer more reliability at range than Wi-Fi, but require a compatible hub.

Getting the dimmer technology right for your bulb type is the single most important step. Trailing-edge or universal units with a low minimum load rating will cover the vast majority of modern LED installations without issue.
